Reviewed by Dawn Brown, LPC, NCC · December 07, 2020 ·

Schizophrenia is a very serious mental health condition, but many people fail to understand what it’s all about. Some people have misconceptions about schizophrenia because the mental health condition hasn’t always been portrayed completely honestly. There might be situations where you have been led to believe that all schizophrenic people are violent because of movies about violent people who have schizophrenia. Thankfully, some pretty good movies out there discuss or cover schizophrenia in interesting ways. If you watch movies like this, then you’ll be much more likely to understand more about the condition.

Take a look at the following five schizophrenia movie recommendations that can help you to learn a bit more about mental illness. Not all of these movies present a completely accurate portrayal of schizophrenia. Still, some do a really good job of helping people understand and relate to schizophrenia. Taking the time to learn a bit about these movies will prove to be both entertaining and informative. The movies on this list are all worth watching for some reason, but you might gravitate toward some over others based on your personal preferences.

  1. A Beautiful Mind

A Beautiful Mind came out in 2001, and it’s probably the most famous film about a character who has schizophrenia. Perhaps the most interesting thing about this film is that it is based on a real person. John Nash Jr. was a man who was considered to be one of the most gifted mathematicians in the world. He developed paranoid schizophrenia and wound up enduring it greatly for a long time. Nash experienced paranoid delusions and caused great turmoil in his family life. Despite this, Nash was able to get himself to a better place after several years.

Later in Nash’s life, he was able to come back to Princeton University to teach students. This film won many awards, including four Academy Awards, with one being for best picture. At the time, it was considered to be the best portrayal of someone with schizophrenia. If you look at this film with a critical lens, you could say that it is more about the man than the schizophrenia. John Nash Jr. was a truly gifted individual, but some might get the impression that schizophrenia played a role in his genius when that probably isn’t the case.

Regardless, this is a must-watch film for movie fans and those who would like to see a film that interestingly portrays schizophrenia. The fact that it comes from a true story about an important figure in American mathematics history helps out as well. If you’re going to watch one film from this list, then this one should probably be it. It won so many awards for a reason, and the performance given by Russell Crowe is widely considered to be the best of his career. It’s a movie that will make you think about schizophrenia differently.

  1. The Soloist

The Soloist stars both Jamie Foxx and Robert Downey Jr. In the film, Robert Downey Jr’s character hears beautiful violin music playing from his hospital bed. He follows the sounds to find that a homeless man is the one playing. Eventually, he discovers that this homeless individual is living with schizophrenia. After meeting up with the man’s family, he discovered that he was once a prodigy who had a mental breakdown and ended up on the streets. Of course, the film might be a bit predictable if you’ve seen many Hollywood films like this, but it’s a very touching movie to watch nonetheless.

The only really bad thing about this movie is that it reinforces the false narrative that schizophrenic individuals are somehow more likely to be gifted. This simply isn’t true, and being gifted is more often associated with conditions such as autism. However, this film is redeeming in many ways because it shows how far someone can fall due to schizophrenic issues. Many people in real life have wound up homeless or desperate due to schizophrenic paranoia or hallucinations. It shows you that it can happen to people from all walks of life, reinforcing the importance of support and treatment.

  1. The Fisher King

The Fisher King is a very endearing 1991 movie that features a schizophrenic character portrayed by Robin Williams. The movie protagonist is someone who experiences depression due to comments that he made as a radio host years ago. These comments led to a mass shooting event, and the protagonist regrets his words so much that he attempts suicide. He doesn’t go through with it, but he is jumped by some bad guys who mistake him for a homeless person. Robin William’s character is a homeless man, and he steps in to save the day.

This is a movie about friendship, and it’s also about learning to forgive yourself. The portrayal of schizophrenia in this movie is pretty good, all things considered. Robin William’s character sees a hallucination of a red knight that is out to get him, and it gets worse when he shows confidence in situations. His character thinks he is on some sort of quest for the holy grail, and this does line up with how some people with schizophrenia will live in an altered reality. This movie is mostly for entertainment, but you do wind up feeling for Robin William’s character quite a bit.

Just know that most people who have schizophrenia will not experience such pronounced delusions. Not all people with schizophrenia will believe they’re on fantastic quests, but it isn’t outside the realm of possibility. If you’d like to watch an entertaining movie that is also quite sad in many ways, then the Fisher King is an easy movie to recommend. It holds up well, and it showcases why Robin Williams was considered such a treasure of an actor.

  1. Lilith

Lilith is a 1964 film that stars a schizophrenic protagonist named Lilith. The two wind up falling in love, which sets off a series of events that leads to the movie’s main conflict. Another patient is also in love with Lilith, and something happens to Vincent that causes Lilith to lose touch with reality. You see Lilith develop more problems with her schizophrenia due to an emotional response to the events around her.

The main problem with this movie is that it doesn’t depict schizophrenia so it is completely consistent with reality. There aren’t any real representations of hallucination symptoms or anything like that. You could also say that this movie is much more about romance than it is about schizophrenia. That doesn’t mean that this isn’t a pretty entertaining film about the subject matter, though. Just don’t go into this one expecting something that will teach you all about the mental disorder since it’s more focused on entertainment.

  1. The Snake Pit

The Snake Pit is a movie that came out way back in 1948, but that doesn’t mean that it isn’t a good one. This movie is about an inmate named Virginia at a mental asylum that doesn’t completely remember who she is. She has slipped into schizophrenia and is now living in an altered reality. Virginia doesn’t even remember her husband, Robert, due to the hallucinations that she is experiencing. This movie is very dated, but it shows how some people with schizophrenia can experience reality differently and lose themselves. In the movie, Virginia is being treated by a kind doctor named Dr. Kik.

Throughout the movie, you see callbacks to Virginia’s relationship with her husband. There is some turmoil at the hospital, and the good Dr. Kik generally does his best to help Virginia improve her condition. By the time the credits roll, Virginia is much improved and reunited with her husband. This isn’t a wholly realistic depiction of schizophrenia treatment, but it’s nice to see an older movie positively showcasing a schizophrenic protagonist. The movie acts like Virginia’s schizophrenia is suddenly cured due to the doctor’s actions. However, it’s still a pretty good movie about the subject when you consider the limited understanding of schizophrenia at the time.
