More about me
Years in Practice: 7
My name is Grant Tomey and I am a Licensed Professional Counselor in the state of Virginia. My counseling approach is based upon the premise that, above all, the relationship that you have with your counselor is of utmost importance. Without this strong foundation, which includes a great deal of trust and mutual understanding, progress will be limited. My first goal is to make the people I counsel feel like I understand them and the issues that they are presenting. I accomplish this through a relaxed, down-to-earth, and nonjudgmental approach. Empathy is the bedrock of my clinical practice, and this ideal is demonstrated in the level of attention I provide each one of my clients.
Once good rapport is established, working from the Person-Centered approach, I utilize a combination of Solution-Focused and Cognitive-Behavioral techniques to bring my clients to a place where they are able to find their own answers. While counseling can be an immensely rewarding and enriching experience, no one wants to have to rely on it indefinitely. Through your work with me, you will get closer to becoming your own expert on yourself, your world, and your relationships.
I received my bachelor's degree in psychology from West Chester University in 2012 and my master's degree in Mental Health Counseling from Old Dominion University in 2014. For the past 7 years, I have worked with all age groups and populations, and feel comfortable providing care to individuals with mild through more severe mental health issues.
Personally, I enjoy spending time with my family (including furry creatures), cooking, working out, and playing music. I believe we can all benefit from taking time to better ourselves, and counseling is an integral part of that process. I look forward to talking with you, getting to know you, and becoming a part your experience of getting to know yourself better.
About online counseling
Online counseling allows you to receive care from an online mental health practitioner via phone, video chat, or instant messaging. It is convenient for those who may have trouble getting to or would prefer not to have in-person therapy appointments. Ranging from $35 to $80 per week, online counseling is generally more affordable than in-person counseling. A study by researchers at University of California, Berkeley found that online counseling can be just as effective as face-to-face therapy while being more convenient, affordable, and accessible.
