Hello! I am excited to be considered as your counselor and friend! I have spent the last 25+ years counseling many diverse people as a minister, Army and hospital chaplain, and now a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist. I hold a doctorate in management and three Master degrees (counseling, religion, ministry), but I also hold a passion for help people who feel lost, broken, abandoned, anxious, or traumatized. I am deeply concerned for the well being of marriages and have lots of experience dealing with couples including those surviving infidelity. I also am a Certified Family Trauma Professional and trained in approaches that help treat trauma. Moreover, as a chaplain I am well acquainted with grief and loss including the loss of a child. My counseling approach is integrative, using aspects of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Constructivist, Solution-Focused, mindfulness, family systems, and Emotionally Focused Therapy. I tend to be analytical and curious. I also try to make the experience fun when I can!

P.S. Some notes that help me know about you:

1. Make sure you are in Texas, and I know where you are. If you leave the state, we have to postpone sessions.

About online counseling

We’ve only had a few sessions so it is difficult to write a thorough review at this time. However, Dr. VanHook, is what I need and I believe God has placed me in his care for that reason. I wanted and needed someone that can help me with the anxiety and years of depression using scripture as the primary source and Dr. VanHook is well versed in that area. He is empathetic and shows genuine concern for my well being, which makes it easy for me to be able to talk freely about my struggles and fears, without feeling that I am being judged. He is very understanding and professional in addressing my needs and concerns.

Nothing bad to say about Rev VanHook, I've only talked to him once and he was good at helping me talk through a couple of problems. More sessions will reveal how it goes.

I'm a wounded combat veteran who's spent the last 17 years dealing with the effects of multiple combat tours. Initially, I walked into counseling because my wife and I wanted to tune-up our marriage. Eventually, there were issues that arose from my military experience that I wasn't dealing with and had buried for years that were affecting all aspects of my life. I'd done therapy before for PTSD, but there were "soul wounds" I was having a tough time processing. Luckily, Larry is a military chaplain who understands the struggles of soldiers and suggested EMDR together. I'd heard good things, but man... it's changed my life. Larry was able to cut through the BS with me and we worked hard on areas I've kept long protected. Incorporating my faith in the healing process has been essential too. I can't recommend this man enough!

I think the greatest thing about Dr. VanHook is his relationship with God. That in itself is so inspiring and He makes me want to love God even more.
