More about me
Hello and welcome! My name is Susan and I am a licensed professional counselor in the state of Virginia. When facing challenges and pain we all need compassion, acceptance, and understanding as well as guidance and at times direction and encouragement from an outside perspective. I consider myself a supportive, compassionate guide towards helping you accomplish your specific goals.
I have worked in the mental health field for 14 years in a variety of settings including residential treatment, intensive in-home counseling, public school settings, outpatient and equine-assisted psychotherapy (a form of outdoor animal- assisted therapy). I have experience with adults, adolescents, children, couples and families.
I specialize in anxiety, stress management, depression, anger management, adjusting to life transitions and changes, relationship and self-esteem issues. My experience also includes treating a wide variety of additional issues such as PTSD, personality disorders, family/parenting, grief/ loss and other serious mental and emotional issues. I practice a combination of person-centered, cognitive -behavioral, strengths-based and solution-focused therapy among other approaches.
I see our work together as a collaborative effort and I seek to help empower you by exploring your strengths, encouraging regular self-care and helping you identify your best solutions to problems. I also offer education on effective coping strategies and interventions and assist you in identifying any unhelpful ways of thinking that can hold you back from experiencing the well-being you desire.
I believe everyone is capable of healing, growth, and increased life satisfaction and I’m here to help support you in that process.
About online counseling
Online counseling allows you to receive care from an online mental health practitioner via phone, video chat, or instant messaging. It is convenient for those who may have trouble getting to or would prefer not to have in-person therapy appointments. Ranging from $35 to $80 per week, online counseling is generally more affordable than in-person counseling. A study by researchers at University of California, Berkeley found that online counseling can be just as effective as face-to-face therapy while being more convenient, affordable, and accessible.
