More about me
Years in Practice: 11
My name is Martha Rackets. I am a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist (LMFT) in Virginia and Maryland. I am also a board-approved clinical supervisor in Virginia and have been supervising students and residents for 7 years. I started my practice working primarily with couples and individuals who were struggling with relationship dynamics, dating life, family challenges, or who feel ambivalence about how to move forward in their relationships. I have also developed specialty in mentoring and coaching executives and individuals who are transitioning into leadership or supervisory roles in their career. Another area that I specialize in is working with individuals, couples and families where someone is experiencing substance abuse, addiction, or problematic behaviors. I worked for substance abuse treatment companies for 5 years, including acting as a therapist, manager, director and executive director. I also have extensive experience working with individuals struggling with anxiety, depression, self-esteem and confidence, and life transitions and integrate a trauma-informed or trauma-focused lens, as needed, if traumas or traumatic stress are part of my client's history.
I would describe my approach as empathetic, warm, goal oriented, and client centered. I am able to help clients stay focused on their goals, and see progress quickly. I use Cognitive Behavioral therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT), Solution focused therapy, and attachment-based, insight orientated therapies to help my clients set goals and objectives, work through their traumas and stuck points, and feel empowered once they have met their goals. I am also trained in EMDR, biofeedback, Gottman couples therapy methods, and integrate somatic and expressive therapies into my work.
I earned my Bachelors Degrees from Virginia Tech in Human Development and Sociology. I then went on to earn my Masters Degree from the University of Kentucky in Marriage and Family Therapy. I have also completed doctorate coursework in Family Science from the University of Kentucky.
I have been married for 3 years and we have 2 young children. In addition to working as a therapist, I have also been a college instructor, CrossFit coach and competitor, a behavioral health executive, and a couples communication and finances educator! I enjoy exercise, yoga, true crime, singing, being outside, spending time with family, and enjoying my two young sons.
I typically check messages from clients 1x/day and conduct most of my therapy in live sessions. I typically prefer to conduct a video session for my first meeting with clients to get the best understand of their communication, affect and personality. I am available for phone, video and chat sessions on Mondays, Tuesdays and Fridays.
I look forward to talking with you.
About online counseling
Online counseling allows you to receive care from an online mental health practitioner via phone, video chat, or instant messaging. It is convenient for those who may have trouble getting to or would prefer not to have in-person therapy appointments. Ranging from $35 to $80 per week, online counseling is generally more affordable than in-person counseling. A study by researchers at University of California, Berkeley found that online counseling can be just as effective as face-to-face therapy while being more convenient, affordable, and accessible.
