Melanie is a wonderful resource. She directed me to a Podcast calledTherapy Thoughts. That in turn led me to a spot-on book about self-compassion. I like her style and her calm way of engaging me. Thank you!

Hi! Let me take a few minutes to share a little bit about myself and my education, professional background, and experiences. I have Bachelor degrees in Psychology and Sociology and decided to pursue a Master's of Social Work in graduate school. Once I graduated with my Masters, I started work for an adoption agency, where I worked specifically researching, developing treatment modalities, and eventually treating families and children dealing with adoption and attachment issues. This was awesome experience, and I learned skills that I have used throughout my career. I worked in the adoption and attachment field for 3 years, where I received clinical supervision and became licensed!
Many of my clients in that practice had dealt with trauma and loss in their lives. This prepared me for my next clinical setting, where I worked with adolescent boys and girls, living outside of their family of origin (for a variety of reasons). Doing this work, I honed my listening skills and was able to offer consistent support to my clients and even their families at times. Support was a new gift for many of my clients and even the most difficult adolescents typically didn't argue about going to therapy with Ms. Melanie!
After approximately 8 years of seeing adolescents and then training and supervising other therapists in that setting, I moved to the totally new setting of health care! I started working in a hospital doing discharge planning services. I left supervision, management, and training behind to just work with families in times of great stress and fear. Hospitals can be scary places if you don't work in one! Believe me, in the first few months, I looked up more vocabulary words on Google than I have in the past 20 years combined!
Thankfully, I found that I loved working in health care. Helping patients and their families navigate through the confusing language and stress in a hospital brought great reward for me as a professional. I started in healthcare in 2013 and have moved to a position where I no longer have direct contact with patients, which was the reason I started in the first place. Now, thanks to BetterHelp, I am looking forward to offering my skills and support to clients through this virtual platform!
My areas of expertise: anxiety, adoption, attachment issues, isolation, adolescents, life changes/stages, grief, loss. I have recently had significant training working with clients facing LGBTQ issues.
About online counseling
Online counseling allows you to receive care from an online mental health practitioner via phone, video chat, or instant messaging. It is convenient for those who may have trouble getting to or would prefer not to have in-person therapy appointments. Ranging from $35 to $80 per week, online counseling is generally more affordable than in-person counseling. A study by researchers at University of California, Berkeley found that online counseling can be just as effective as face-to-face therapy while being more convenient, affordable, and accessible.
