More about me
Years in Practice: 23
First and foremost, I commend you for reaching out for help. My name is Jennifer Barnes. I have been a Certified Substance Abuse Counselor since 2001 and a Licensed Clinical Social Worker since 2005. I attended Virginia Tech where I got my Bachelor's Degree in Psychology and then I went straight on to graduate school. I graduated from the University of Pennsylvania with my Masters in Social Work. I have been in this field for over 20 years, yet I do not claim to be an expert. I am learning new things every day and with each new client I work with. Although I specialize in and am passionate about addictions counseling, I also have experience in helping clients recovery from depression, anxiety, stress, negative self talk, low self-esteem, relationship issues, and military family issues. My treatment approach is individualized, deciding together with you what methods and techniques you are comfortable with. You are in charge of your treatment. Typically I use some combination of cognitive behavioral therapy, positive psychology, strengths perspective, solution-focused therapy, and mindfulness techniques. I have received feedback from clients who state they found me to be very easy to talk to, flexible, comforting, and trustworthy. I tend to incorporate humor where appropriate, as I believe that laughter truly is good for the soul, AND it helps to break the ice. If you so choose, I look forward to working with you. And remember, you got this!
About online counseling
Online counseling allows you to receive care from an online mental health practitioner via phone, video chat, or instant messaging. It is convenient for those who may have trouble getting to or would prefer not to have in-person therapy appointments. Ranging from $35 to $80 per week, online counseling is generally more affordable than in-person counseling. A study by researchers at University of California, Berkeley found that online counseling can be just as effective as face-to-face therapy while being more convenient, affordable, and accessible.
