More about me
Years in Practice: 33
My name is Mary Dolby McDonald and I have been a clinical social worker for over 30 years. I received my graduate degree from Boston University in 1988, and have continued to gain education and training on evidence based treatment modules that are known to be the most helpful for my clients. Through the years I have worked successfully with people who are experiencing depression, anxiety, trauma, issues related to life transitions like separation, divorce, immigration. I have worked with adults parenting children with disabilities of all types. I am have been intensively trained in Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT) and use a combination of DBT and cognitive behavioral therapy in my treatment. My focus is on helping the client appreciate the strengths that they have and develop skills to overcome those areas of difficulty that get in the way of their life goals. The most important initial goal of mine is to form a trusting relationship with my clients and to fully understand what they would like to change in their life and, what they need to accept. I feel that an important goal of therapy is not necessarily about feeling better, but about tolerating all feelings better.
About online counseling
Online counseling allows you to receive care from an online mental health practitioner via phone, video chat, or instant messaging. It is convenient for those who may have trouble getting to or would prefer not to have in-person therapy appointments. Ranging from $35 to $80 per week, online counseling is generally more affordable than in-person counseling. A study by researchers at University of California, Berkeley found that online counseling can be just as effective as face-to-face therapy while being more convenient, affordable, and accessible.
