I was hesitant to admit I needed therapy and sought betterhelp as a means to attend therapy in a manner that would fit my busy personal and professional life. John has been most accommodating in both respects. We worked for a while fleshing out what I needed to get out of therapy and what we could address. He's patient when I faulter, supports and encourages my progress. His reinforcements of my own thoughts and feelings and gentle guidance where I can make adjustments to both of those have been exactly what I need in a therapist. Someone to reaffirm that a lot of my feelings are valid, but also to help me understand why I have them and what to do with them. John is extremely flexible with scheduling and ensures we meet as regularly as I need. I've had to reschedule several times due to conflicts on my end and he always finds a way to accomodate these changes. Our discussions are very productive. We primarily video chat as its the fastest way to share ideas, but occasionally when I think of something I'll just send him a message and he responds in due time there as well.

John Penn Turner is the acme of therapists. I am so fortunate to have him and to see him and to converse therapeutically every week. My mental health has more greatly benefited than I can say, from his work with me. I wish everyone could have him as their therapist, and I know that he would do superlative therapy.

I provide psychotherapy for adults working from a client-centered perspective that is integrative, collaborative, and recovery-based (i.e., incorporates client's strengths as opposed to solely focusing on negatives or pathology). This provides a safe space for clients to feel heard, understood, and respected. I am a Certified Grief Recovery Specialist and have extensive training and experience in working with clients with a trauma informed approach. I incorporate a recovery approach grounded in the 12-Steps for both addition recovery and ACOA/Al-Anon. I am also an expert in working with gay, lesbian, bisexual, and same sex attracted clients, and the unique psychological issues present in the community.
I have been in practice since 1996 and I have worked with individuals in ages ranging from 18 to 85 years old. I support clients in building positive communication, fostering meaningful relationships, practicing appropriate social skills, utilizing healthy coping strategies, and to establish and maintain healthy boundaries within a culturally sensitive approach in order to generate lasting interpersonal change.
I treat everyone with respect and warmth. I work to ensure that our sessions will be tailored to your needs and goals. I’m available for online therapy sessions with individuals anywhere in the states of Virginia and New Mexico. I graduated from Medical College of Virginia in 1994. John Penn Turner knows how to treat the mental health of clients with as much care as though it were his own. He gives very good therapy that is suited to the client, and he bends over backward to respond to written questions, too. He is thorough, insightful, tactful, empathic, and clear in his directions,
